Senior Law
NNJLS’ Senior Law Project provides free legal assistance in civil matters to residents of Bergen, Hudson and Passaic Counties who are age sixty or older. Our dedicated Senior Law Project attorneys provide advice and representation to seniors in a variety of matters, including reductions or terminations of public benefits (Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, food stamps, PAAD); evictions, lockouts, other landlord-tenant matters, and mortgage foreclosures; consumer issues such as bankruptcy; debt collection and fraud; and domestic violence. In certain cases, we can also help seniors safeguard their independence by helping them with Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Advance Directives.
If a Senior Citizen does not qualify for assistance by our Senior Law Project, they will be screened for eligibility for representation by one of our other staff attorneys. If NNJLS is still unable to help a senior with a specific legal request, we will be happy to provide referrals to another attorney or social service agency that may be able to provide the services needed.
