Public Benefits Law
The Public Benefits Law Unit helps eligible individuals and families who need assistance in obtaining or maintaining public benefits to keep themselves and their families secure. NNJLS attorneys offer help in matters involving:
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); General Assistance (GA); Emergency Assistance (EA)
- Social security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Food Stamps
- Unemployment
- Health care assistance such as Medicaid, Medicare, or NJ Family Care
And many other types of public assistance as well.
If your benefits have been denied, terminated, or suspended, or if you received notice of an overpayment, you are entitled to receive a written explanation from the agency administering the benefit. You also have a right to a Fair Hearing. If you are financially eligible for our services, an experienced NNJLS attorney can provide you with advice and representation in your Public Benefits matter. Note that many agencies impose strict time limits for requesting a fair hearing. If the deadline for requesting a hearing is soon, it is a good idea to go ahead and request the hearing on your own even before you are able to discuss the matter with one of our attorneys.
