NNJLS Victims of Domestic Violence Representation Project

Pulpit rock

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services helps hundreds of victims of domestic violence each year through its Domestic Violence Representation Project. Our attorneys provide free legal representation and advice to obtain protective orders and address related legal issues, such as child custody, child support, spousal support, and retention of the home. Victim safety is of utmost concern, and NNJLS has protocols in place to ensure the confidentiality of clients’ identities and contact information. NNJLS attorneys also provide Community Legal Education workshops to community groups, service providers, schools, and other organizations to help educate people about family law, domestic violence, and their legal rights.

Anna, one of our clients, was a victim of domestic violence.  She turned to Northeast New Jersey Legal Services for help, where she met with a knowledgeable attorney who understood the courage it took for her to come forward. The attorney explained to Anna her rights as a victim, gathered evidence, and filed for a restraining order on her behalf. Anna went to court with an experienced NNJLS attorney by her side, advocating for her every step of the way. When the court entered a final restraining order to protect Anna from further abuse, she was very relieved. She was finally safe.
